Brevig Mission, Alaska

The small coastal village of Brevig Mission (±428) is located at the mouth of Shelman Creek on Port Clarence, 5 miles northwest of Teller and 65 miles northwest of Nome. Brevig Mission is named for the Norwegian Lutheran pastor Tollef L. Brevig who served throughout the region. Around 93% of Brevig Mission residents are of Inupiat descent. The Inupiaq name for the village is Sitaisaq. Inupiat culture has been present in Alaska for thousands of years and continues to grow today.

Brevig Mission School provides K-12 education. In addition, Brevig Mission has two stores, a medical clinic, a church, and a post office. Many residents rely on subsistence living, following the tradition of their ancestors. Moose, reindeer, seal, fish, and berries harvested from the surrounding ocean, rivers, and tundra are essential staples.

A small airfield on the eastern portion of town allows small aircraft and acts as the main gateway into and out of Brevig Mission. Although the warmer months enable accessibility to the village by boat or barge, the colder months witness the ocean freezing, limiting access.
